Understand the current PTE Academic format
PTE Academic assesses communicative skills through three test parts:
- Speaking and Writing: tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Written Text and Write Essay.
- Reading: tasks including multiple choice, paragraph ordering and fill-in-the-blank formats.

Some questions contribute to more than one skill. The test has also evolved, so prepare from the current official task-format pages rather than an old task list.
Read the score report correctly
The official PTE Academic scoring guide explains that scores run from 10 to 90 and include an overall result plus communicative-skill scores. Pearson notes that institutions and governments decide which scores and tests they accept.
Do not translate a desired IELTS band into a PTE goal from an unofficial chart and stop there. Use the actual requirement published by the organization receiving your score.
A useful preparation sequence
- Take a diagnostic using current task types.
- Separate English-language gaps from test-format and time-management gaps.
- Practise speaking with clear content, intelligible pronunciation and steady pacing.
- Build writing accuracy, structure and control rather than memorising a universal template.
- Review reading and listening errors by task and language feature.
- Complete timed practice and use the results to revise the weekly plan.
Because the test is computer based, microphone technique, typing accuracy, note-taking and managing the on-screen timer should be practised under realistic conditions.
