TOEFL measures how effectively you use English in an academic setting. A useful preparation plan begins with the score expectations of your intended institutions, followed by an honest baseline across all four skills. ETS does not set one universal passing score; universities and other organisations decide what they require.

What to prepare for

The TOEFL iBT assesses Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Some tasks require you to combine information from more than one source or skill. Review the current TOEFL iBT test content before preparing because ETS may update task formats and scoring information.

Check the requirement for each course directly—not just the university-wide minimum. The official guidance on understanding TOEFL scores explains why acceptable scores vary by institution.

A balanced study plan

Begin with a representative practice test and review results by task type. Your plan should develop academic English while also building familiarity with the test.

• Read academic passages and identify purpose, structure and supporting evidence.
• Take concise notes while listening, then reconstruct the main argument.
• Record speaking responses and review clarity, organisation and pacing.
• Practise writing focused responses supported by the provided material.
• Complete timed mixed practice and analyse errors before taking another test.

Memorised templates may help with organisation, but they should not replace a direct answer or clear reasoning. Regular exposure to academic English and specific feedback are more durable.
