Use a five-step planning process

EducationUSA, the U.S. Department of State’s official advising network, organises planning into five stages: research your options, finance your studies, complete the application, apply for a student visa and prepare for departure. Treat these as connected decisions rather than separate last-minute tasks.

Research universities systematically

Compare program curriculum, institution accreditation, location, campus support, total attendance cost and application requirements. Make a balanced shortlist based on academic fit and affordability. Admissions and testing policies vary, so verify whether each program requires the SAT, GRE, an English-language test or another assessment for your intake.

Record for each university:

• required academic records, recommendations and written responses;
• test and English-language policies;
• application and financial-aid deadlines;
• tuition, fees, housing, insurance and other estimated costs;
• scholarship conditions and the remaining amount your family must fund.

Prepare a coherent application

Your grades, activities, recommendations and essays should give an accurate account of your preparation and goals. Avoid generic statements that could be sent to any university. Financial planning should be realistic even if a scholarship is competitive or partial.

After admission, follow the institution’s instructions and current official visa guidance. Keep documents accurate and consistent; do not use borrowed stories, altered records or unsupported financial claims.
