Third-party lists can become outdated. Confirm each opportunity on the provider’s current scholarship page and check:

• campus and intake;
• academic threshold;
• English or admission conditions;
• separate application requirements;
• closing date and time zone;
• number of awards where published.

Some scholarships are assessed automatically with admission. Others need a separate form, essay, reference, interview or portfolio. An admission application does not always count as a scholarship application.

Compare the actual value

A headline percentage gives an incomplete picture. Calculate:

• the amount deducted each teaching period;
• the number of years or credits covered;
• fees excluded from the award;
• remaining tuition across the course;
• compulsory course costs;
• living costs and Overseas Student Health Cover;
• any stipend or allowance payment schedule.

Check whether the scholarship is a fixed amount or a percentage of tuition. Confirm whether annual fee changes affect the remaining balance.

Read continuation conditions

An award may require the student to:

• maintain a stated grade or course progress;
• remain enrolled at a particular study load;
• stay in an eligible course or campus;
• meet conduct requirements;
• avoid holding another scholarship;
• complete review or reporting tasks.

Ask what happens after a failed unit, approved leave, course transfer or reduced study load. Keep the offer and scholarship terms together.

Prepare a strong application

Address the published selection criteria with specific evidence. Useful material may include:

• academic transcripts and awards;
• leadership or community roles;
• employment, research or project experience;
• a portfolio or publications;
• references that address the criteria;
• a focused statement about study plans and intended contribution.

Use verifiable examples. A concise account of a project, responsibility or result is more useful than broad claims about passion and excellence.

Submit before the deadline and keep the confirmation. Check whether updated results or an unconditional offer must arrive by a separate date.

Research scholarships for higher degrees

The Australian Government’s Research Training Program supports eligible universities that train domestic and international students in research masters and doctoral degrees. A university may offer a fee offset, stipend, allowances or a combination.

Students apply to participating universities. Each university controls its application rounds, selection method and award details. Research fit, supervisor availability, prior research, publications, references and the proposal can affect competitiveness.

Keep the budget independent of an unconfirmed award

A scholarship application can be competitive even when the student meets the minimum criteria. Do not pay a deposit or make a course affordable on the assumption that an award will arrive later.

Build three figures:

1. the full course and living cost without a scholarship;
2. the cost after a confirmed award;
3. the amount still available for unexpected expenses.

If the first figure is unworkable, choose another suitable course or wait for a written scholarship decision before committing.
